1917 Bath Riots - immigration and naturalization practices involved forcing Mexicans at the border to  "strip naked and be disinfected with various chemical agents, including gasoline, kerosene, sodium cyanide, cyanogens, sulfuric acid, and Zyklon B before gaining entry into the United States." a year before the riots 27 people died when someone lit a match near the bathing area - unfortunately the riot didn’t change much of anything and similar practices continued for decades

Summer of 1967 - Long Hot Summer, “Summer of Love - nearly 160 race riots ensued; “On the evening of July 12, the largest of the year’s riots began in Newark. A black taxi driver, John Smith, was pulled over by police after he passed a double-parked police car. Officers beat him in front of incensed onlookers from a nearby housing project and took him to the local police station. According to their report, Smith was arrested on several charges, including tailgating, wrong-way driving, and assault…. In the five-day period of looting, arson, and rioting—the most destructive such episode in New Jersey’s history—the U.S. National Guard was called to assist police officers.  Some 26 people were killed, more than 700 were injured, and more than 1,000 residents were arrested.”

Trail of Tears - Native Americans forcibly moved from Southern states (Georgia, North Carolina, Alabama, and Tennessee) to Oklahoma, thousands died of disease, exhaustion, and troops killing those who refused to leave, the Cherokee resisted their Removal by creating their own newspaper, The Cherokee Phoenix, as a platform for their views.  They sent their educated young men on speaking tours throughout the United States.  They lobbied Congress, and created a petition with more than 15,000 Cherokee signatures against Removal.  They took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled that they were a sovereign nation in Worcester vs. Georgia (1832).  President Andrew Jackson ignored the Supreme Court decision, enforced his Indian Removal Act of 1830, and pushed through the Treaty of New Echota.
